ASK THE OFFICIAL

Becoming a USTA Official
by Ken Montgomery

Q: How do I become become a USTA official? I'm interested in becoming a tennis umpire when I retire in afew years. How many days per year does the good umpire work that is available for assignments?

A: You will need to be a current of the USTA member. Go to the USTA web site at USTA.com find the link on the left for Officals than go to Provisional Test take the test and you are on your way. There are some other items on the offical's page that you can download and review. If you love tennis becomming an offical is a great way to see some of the best close up as well as giving back to the sport. We always need good officals and if you stick with it and hone your skills you will have many opportunities to work many events. I'll be looking foreward to working along side of you in the future.
