Oranges
by LD

Q: I understand that you should not eat oranges before or during a match. Why? Thanks

A: Dear LD, I have not heard that before. I can only assume that perhaps during a match there is an increase in stress therefore stomach acidity may increase. When eating oranges (which are loaded with ascorbic acid) may contribute to the increase in stomach acidity. This may upset the stomach and your ability to sustain a great mental game will be compromised. On other hand, oranges are great source of nutrients during the match because of the fruit sugars and natural occurring vitamins. Oranges like many other fruits go into the body acidic and once in the system actually contribute to alkalinizing the body. In conclusion, always take advice with caution. There is so much information out there and everyone is an expert. It really comes down to how do you feel when you take an orange during a match?
