ASK THE NUTRITIONIST
Cramps
by CA
Q: I play and practice tennis quite often, 3-4 times a week and 2-3 hours each. I sweat a lot, going through 3-6 t-shirts easily and each one is completely soaked through. I drink about 2 bottles (32 oz. each) of Gatorade Endurance. During match time, where the temperature might be 100, towards the end of the match, I've gotten cramps on my calf as well as my thigh. What can I do to prevent getting cramps?
A: Dear CA,
It may sound like your electrolytes are still rapidly depleting. I do not care for any Gatorade products. I would rather see an athlete using the powder EmergenC by Alacer about fives a day diluted in good spring water. Better yet, now you can get clustered water that accelerates hydration and retains nutrients better. The new clustered water is called Vivo and you can get it at www.drinkvivo.com.
Next, the best nutrient on anti-cramping is the mineral magnesium. The newest and greatest magnesium product is magnesium malate. It has both the vessel dilation capability of magnesium and the anti-lactic acid action of malate. With all these additions to your current situation you should see and feel a huge difference. Please feel free to call me and let me know how you do.
Best of Health,
Robert Karlsson, CCN
